This rare meteorological phenomenon, explained by the collision of electrically-charged sun particles in the atmosphere, can be observed between September and March.<\/p>

Visit Jukkasj\u00e4rvi<\/h3>\r\n

Located 15 minutes east<\/strong> of Kiruna, Jukkasj\u00e4rvi is a small, typically Swedish village. There are many activities and places to visit here.<\/p>

For starters, there's the Jukkasj\u00e4rvi church<\/strong>. The oldest wooden church in Lapland, it was built in 1608. It's famous for its altarpiece, created by Brother Hjorth, and its red color, typical<\/strong> of its rich architecture and history.<\/p>

You can also visit the Sami Museum<\/strong>, the M\u00e1rkanb\u00e1iki<\/em>, where you can learn about the way of life of the local population: the Sami. and discover the traditions and customs of this nomadic people<\/strong>. You can even pet reindeer and enjoy a traditional meal in an authentic restaurant, Caf\u00e9 S\u00e1pmi.<\/p>

Finally, you can discover the Ice Hotel<\/strong>.<\/em> This unique icehotel<\/em>was created in 1989 by Yngve Bergqvist. Come and discover the frozen sculptures, whose theme changes every year, and the famous cold rooms<\/strong><\/em> made of snow and ice where you can stay.<\/p>

Visit Abisko<\/h3>\r\n

Abisko is a mountain village<\/strong> located an hour north of Kiruna. There are many outdoor activities to be enjoyed here:<\/p>

Discover the snow-covered landscapes of Abisko National Park in a variety of ways. Either aboard a snowmobile<\/strong>, getting your adrenalin pumping as you explore the forest and Lake Abiskojaure<\/em>, or enjoying a leisurely ride on a<\/strong> dog-drawn sleigh<\/strong>.<\/p>

You can also take advantage of the park's unspoilt wilderness by wandering into the heart of the park on a variety of hiking trails<\/strong> to see Lake<\/strong> Tornetr\u00e4sk<\/strong><\/em>, one of Sweden's largest, Lake <\/strong>Trollsj\u00f6n<\/strong><\/em> or follow the famous Kungsleden trail from Abisko to the south of Sweden.<\/p>

Alternatively, head for the Abisko Sky Station, a viewpoint located at 900 meters above sea level and reputed to be the ideal vantage point<\/strong> for observing the northern lights.<\/p>

Visit the LKAB mine<\/h3>\r\n

The Luossavaara-Kiirunavaara Aktiebolag<\/em> mine, renamed LKAB, is the world's largest iron ore mine<\/strong> still in operation today. Located on the Kiirunavaara mountain, its construction was decisive in the development of Kiruna.<\/p>

Here’s what you need to know <\/strong>before booking your stay in Kiruna.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Downtown Kiruna<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

As mentioned above, Kiruna has a distinctive feature<\/strong>. By 2035, its town center will have moved<\/strong> a few kilometers to the east! This is linked to mining activity, which over the decades has led to subsidence, now posing safety problems. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The historic center, now known as “old Kiruna”, is destined to disappear completely. Where a “new Kiruna” has appeared, with more modern buildings. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Initially, it housed the town hall, boutiques and restaurants, as well as a number of hotels. But it’s growing. There are even plans to move the church. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

How many days can you devote to it?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Kiruna’s surface area is rather vast, and even more so if you include Jukkasj\u00e4rvi, where some of the activities are located. If you go there, it’s usually to take advantage of the outdoor activities<\/strong>, often off the beaten track in the surrounding countryside. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

So if you have a car, you’ll have no trouble getting there. On the other hand, if you’re not, don’t worry: the vast majority of activities include a pick-up from your hotel. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

So you can easily stay a few days in Kiruna to enjoy what the region has to offer. This is what some tourists do to complement a winter stay in Stockholm. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

But we recommend that you stay for around a week<\/strong>. That way, you’ll have plenty of time to enjoy the city, its surroundings and its many activities. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Where to eat in Kiruna?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Kiruna has a number of establishments<\/strong> offering a variety of cuisines. Traditional, on-the-go, upscale or spectacular… You’ll be spoilt for choice when it comes to choosing where to eat! <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Most restaurants are located in the center of Kiruna<\/strong>. Either in dedicated establishments, or in hotels, like the Scandic<\/em>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In fact, in many places, you can enjoy an all-you-can-eat buffet at lunchtime, or unique dishes served in hotel dining areas. These allow you to eat outside your hotel for less, without needing to make a reservation. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Otherwise, be sure to make reservations <\/strong>, as restaurants are often fully booked. What’s more, Swedes are used to eating (very) early <\/strong>: some reservations start at 5pm! <\/p>\n\n\n\n

So don’t be surprised if you’re offered these times, and perhaps try to adapt to them. You’ll then be able to enjoy your evening to the full. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

How do I get there?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Despite its size and location, Kiruna is very well served <\/strong>. So you’ll have no trouble getting there in any number of ways. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

By train<\/strong>, you can depart from Sweden’s capital (Stockholm) or even from other Swedish destinations (such as Malm\u00f6 or G\u00f6teborg, for example). Via SJ, you can book a seat or sleeper and set off on a 15-hour overnight journey<\/strong> through the Swedish countryside. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

To get there by plane<\/strong>, you’ll need to make a stopover. The two main airlines serving Kiruna are SAS<\/em> and Norwegian<\/em>. However, be careful when you buy your tickets: use a flight comparator, as stopovers can sometimes last a whole day! <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Apart from that, you should find it easy to get to this city in the far north, thanks to the many flights scheduled into the country every day<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For the more athletic, you can also take the famous Sverigeleden<\/em> circuit<\/strong>, which crosses the whole of Sweden. From Helsingborg to Karesuando, you’ll cover almost 2000 kilometers of Swedish countryside. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Just follow the green signs to reach your destination. What’s more, the right of free access to nature means you can camp wherever you like, and the water is pure in most watercourses, so make the most of it! <\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you’re planning to drive<\/strong>, Swedish roads are in excellent condition, and you’ll have no trouble getting to Kiruna, even in snowy conditions. Just take the E4 <\/strong>towards Lule\u00e5, then the E10 <\/strong>towards Kiruna. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Car rental<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Depending on the content of your stay in Kiruna and your habits, renting a car may or may not be useful. Apart from that, for a sedentary stay where you book activities with pick-up included, such as those mentioned earlier in this article, a car is not an obligation. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In this case, you can easily get around by bus, even in the surrounding area, where bus stops are recognizable by their red and blue colors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
