Kiruna’s church<\/strong>, called Kiruna Kyrka<\/em> by the locals, was built in the early 20th century by Gustaf Wickman<\/strong>. It is considered one of Sweden’s most beautiful churches, and one of the<\/strong> country’s largest wooden buildings<\/strong>. In addition to its atypical architecture<\/strong>, inspired by traditional Sami huts, it contains unique works by leading Swedish artists. It also has the distinction of having a bell tower on the outside<\/strong>, just a few meters from the main building. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Even if you’re not visiting Kiruna<\/a> for its church, you won’t be disappointed by this remarkable building steeped in history<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n

Admission prices<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Like most religious buildings, Kiruna’s church is free <\/strong>to enter. If you wish to make a donation<\/strong>, you can, of course, place a sum of your choice in a red urn at the entrance to the building. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

You can also buy a postcard, for which you’ll have to spend a few Swedish kronor (SEK).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Opening hours<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The Kiruna church is open daily<\/strong>, Monday to Sunday, from 10am to 3:30pm<\/strong>. However, if you come to visit the interior of the church, be careful not to disturb the religious practices of<\/strong> the locals, who may be gathered for some event. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Allow around 30 minutes in Kiruna’s church to admire the architecture and stroll around the surrounding area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How do I get there?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Just a few minutes’ walk <\/strong>from Kiruna’s old town center, the church sits on a small hill to the west of <\/strong>the town. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you’re coming by bus<\/strong>, the nearest stop is Kiruna Kyrkan<\/em>, 550 meters to the north. Just cross the road to reach a driveway that leads straight to Kiruna Church. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you’re travelling by car<\/strong>, free<\/strong> parking is also available right next door. This means you can park right next to the church building without any difficulty. <\/p>\n\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n

What to see in the church<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Kiruna’s church is a religious building dating from the early 20th century<\/strong>, with two distinct sections. Its distinctive architecture features works by talented Swedish artists. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

From the outside, Kiruna’s church stands out thanks to its red-painted wooden scales, known as“church shavings<\/strong>“. At the top of a hill, surrounded by a nature park<\/strong> populated by birch and mountain ash trees, you’ll appreciate the mix of architecture typical of Swedish churches and Sami huts<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In fact, once you’ve reached the top, you’ll be able to see an iron mine<\/strong> on the other side of the valley, west of Kiruna.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Once in front of the building’s main entrance, you’ll see a religious relief <\/strong>carved from wood, dominated by twelve bronze statues <\/strong>representing human emotions. These works were created by artist Christian Eriksson<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

When you enter the Kiruna church<\/strong>, you can’t help but notice the painting at the back, behind the altar. This altarpiece, entitled“The Sacred Wood<\/em>“, was painted by Prince Eugen of Sweden<\/strong> in 1912. You can also admire works by two other famous Swedish artists: Albert Engstr\u00f6m <\/strong>and Ossian Elgstr\u00f6m<\/strong>. You may also hear the church organ <\/strong>, located just above the entrance. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Finally, when you leave the church, don’t forget to take a look at the bell tower<\/strong>, located just outside the main building. In fact, the tomb of<\/strong> Hjalmar Lundbohm<\/strong>, the first director of LKAB<\/strong> and one of the founders of the city of Kiruna, is located underneath. <\/p>\n\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n

History of the Kiruna church<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Gustaf Wickman<\/strong> (1858-1916) was a Swedish architect <\/strong>. He arrived in Kiruna <\/strong>in 1899 and built many public buildings<\/strong>, including the church between 1909 and 1912. It was commissioned by Hjalmar Lundbom <\/strong>(1855-1926), the first director of the LKAB iron ore mine<\/a> and founder of the town of <\/strong>Kiruna. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lundbom played a major role in the development of the mining town. Buried in Stockholm, he was later moved to Kiruna, where he is buried under the church steeple<\/strong>. His grave can still be visited today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Christian Eriksson<\/strong> (1858-1935) is a Swedish sculptor <\/strong>. He created the twelve Vertus<\/em> sculptures on the eaves of Kiruna church, as well as the relief above the church portal. He was also involved in the creation of the statue of Hjalmar Lundbohm<\/strong>, built in 1924. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The church will be completely dismantled and reassembled in the new town center<\/strong> by 2035, in view of the relocation of the town<\/strong> due to subsidence caused by mining activity.<\/p>\n\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n
