It is considered one of Sweden&#8217;s most beautiful churches, and <strong>one of the<\/strong> country&#8217;s <strong>largest wooden buildings<\/strong>. In addition to its<strong> atypical architecture<\/strong>, inspired by traditional Sami huts, it contains unique works by leading Swedish artists. These works were created by artist <strong>Christian Eriksson<\/strong>.   <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When you enter <strong>the Kiruna church<\/strong>, you can&#8217;t help but notice the painting at the back, behind the altar. This altarpiece, entitled<em>&#8220;The Sacred Wood<\/em>&#8220;, was painted by <strong>Prince Eugen of Sweden<\/strong> in 1912. You can also admire works by two other famous Swedish artists: <strong>Albert Engstr\u00f6m <\/strong>and <strong>Ossian Elgstr\u00f6m<\/strong>. In fact, <strong>the tomb of<\/strong> <strong>Hjalmar Lundbohm<\/strong>, <strong>the first director of LKAB<\/strong> and one of the founders of the city of Kiruna, is located underneath. <\/p>\n\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"gb-container gb-container-ef9c8f68 ksection\"><div class=\"gb-inside-container\">\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center has-large-font-size\" style=\"letter-spacing:0px;text-transform:uppercase\">History of the Kiruna church<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-text-color has-kcolor-color has-alpha-channel-opacity has-kcolor-background-color has-background is-style-wide\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Gustaf Wickman<\/strong> (1858-1916) was a Swedish <strong>architect <\/strong>. He arrived in <strong>Kiruna <\/strong>in 1899 and built many<strong> public buildings<\/strong>, including the church between 1909 and 1912. It was commissioned by <strong>Hjalmar Lundbom <\/strong>(1855-1926), the first director of the <a href=\"https:\/\/go-kiruna.com\/en\/visit-to-the-kiruna-iron-mine\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"1988\">LKAB iron ore mine<\/a> and <strong>founder of the town of <\/strong>Kiruna. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lundbom played a major role in the development of the mining town. Buried in Stockholm, he was later moved to Kiruna, where he is <strong>buried under the church steeple<\/strong>. He created the twelve <em>Vertus<\/em> sculptures on the eaves of Kiruna church, as well as the relief above the church portal.
